What Indiana homes are up against.

A compressor that sits off for most of the year does not escape wear; it trades one kind of stress for another. Homes in Indiana run cooling about three months a year, from June through August. After a long idle, seals dry, contactors corrode, and a fault that developed in the previous season stays hidden until the equipment is called on hard. That first call of the summer is also when every other homeowner discovers the same problem, which is why a contractor inspecting a unit before the season opens finds more to fix than one who shows up in the middle of it.
Before a contractor can spec new equipment for a house here, they have to open the system and look. Half the homes in Indiana were built in 1976 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means the ducts that carried air through a typical Indiana house were sized for a unit built under different load calculations, and the electrical service was wired to match it. A contractor checking either one is not being thorough for its own sake; they are finding out whether what is already in the walls can carry the new system or whether the scope of the job has to grow to include it.
Does your county put extra wear on HVAC equipment?

A condenser sitting outside in Indiana faces hail, high winds, heavy snow loads, and summer heat that runs hard for months. Equipment sized too small for those conditions works at its limit before the season ends, and physical placement determines how much of that punishment it absorbs. The contractor you are matched with accounts for both things before any equipment is quoted or ordered.

Indiana has no statewide HVAC licence and the state says so itself: the Department of Workforce Development states that HVAC licensing is handled at the local level and that the requirements vary from county to county, with only the federal EPA 608 refrigerant certification required everywhere.
