A contractor pricing a central AC installation in Union County is not working around a brutal weather record. 32 severe weather events were recorded in Union County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an occasional event, and it does not accumulate into the kind of sustained load that would drive equipment decisions on its own. What does drive them is how the original system was sized for the house, how well it was installed, and how consistently it was maintained. A contractor quoting a replacement here factors in those variables before anything else.

Unfinished basement with exposed wood joists, galvanized and insulated flexible ductwork overhead, concrete block walls, a coiled black hose and two cardboard boxes on the bare concrete floor.

Ductwork laid out for a furnace and window units was not sized for the static pressure a central AC system runs at, and in Union County's housing stock, that gap is where most installations get complicated. Half the homes in Union County, Indiana were built in 1970 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor pricing a new central AC unit here has to put eyes on the existing duct runs before that quote means anything, because the ducts are what determine whether the new equipment performs as rated or labors against a system that is fighting it. The electrical side matters too, since panels from that era often lack the dedicated circuit a modern condenser needs. The unit itself is straightforward to spec; what is already in the walls is not.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior rooms with ductwork and an indoor air handler connected to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and holds the compressor and the condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or attic. These two units are the physical core of what a contractor brings to the job.

A copper refrigerant line set runs between the indoor and outdoor units, connecting them through the wall or floor. The thermostat goes on an interior wall where it can read the living space accurately. A disconnect box is mounted near the outdoor unit to give the contractor a local shutoff point.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what the configuration looks like in your specific home.
