A contractor quoting a central AC installation in Fountain County has to size the system for the house, not just pull a unit from a catalog and drop it in. The load calculations depend on the structure, the insulation, and how the home actually holds heat. 45 severe weather events were recorded in Fountain County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather here is periodic, and a system that is struggling has likely been struggling because of how it was originally installed or how long it has been running without service, not because the climate has worn it down. A contractor who gets that wrong will leave the homeowner with a system that runs long cycles, strains in August, and falls short of what was quoted.

Unfinished basement with concrete block walls, a bare concrete floor, exposed wood floor joists, and insulated metal ductwork running along the ceiling, with two cardboard boxes and a coiled gray flexible hose on the floor.

Ductwork laid down for a gravity furnace or a boiler system was sized and routed for air volumes that central AC does not match. Half the homes in Fountain County, Indiana were built in 1966 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a new central AC unit here spends real time on what is behind the walls and in the attic before the equipment selection matters at all. If the existing duct runs cannot carry the airflow a new system needs, they get modified or replaced, and that work sets the scope and the price. The electrical panel gets the same look, since a house of this vintage may be running on service that predates the loads a modern condenser draws.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior ductwork connected to an indoor air handler and an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the two components that do the heaviest work in the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace blower sits in a utility space, basement, or closet and pushes conditioned air through the home. The evaporator coil mounts directly above or below that unit, where it pulls heat from indoor air.

The thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the home's air and tells the system when to run. A refrigerant line set, two copper lines wrapped in insulation, runs between the indoor and outdoor units to connect them. A condensate drain line carries moisture pulled from the air out of the house.

The drawing shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house.

Weather in this part of Indiana puts real demands on cooling equipment, and those demands shape what a correct installation looks like here. A unit sized and installed for local conditions handles the workload; one that is not will show it.
