A contractor quoting a central AC install in Sullivan County has to work out what the house actually demands before picking equipment, and the local weather record is a smaller part of that calculation than most homeowners expect. 33 severe weather events were recorded in Sullivan County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an occasional fact of life here, not a standing operating condition. What drives sizing decisions and install quality is the house itself: its age, its duct layout, and how well the envelope holds conditioned air. A system that fails in this county almost certainly failed because of one of those factors, and a contractor will look there first.

Basement or crawl space with concrete block walls and a bare wood joist ceiling, where insulated metal ductwork runs overhead, and a coiled flexible duct and two cardboard boxes sit on the concrete floor.

Ductwork laid into a house carries the history of every decision made when that house went up. Half the homes in Sullivan County, Indiana were built in 1973 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means a contractor sizing a new central AC system here is measuring and pressure-testing runs that were designed around different equipment, different load assumptions, and a different idea of what a home needed to move. If those runs are undersized or leaking badly at the joints, a new unit does not fix that. The electrical service gets the same scrutiny, since the draw a modern condenser places on a panel is not what the original wiring was planned for.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms with furniture, attic ductwork connected to an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit on a pad linked by refrigerant lines.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the two components that do the heaviest work in the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or attic, where it connects to the duct system and handles the indoor side of the process.

The refrigerant line set runs between those two units, linking the outdoor pad to the indoor coil through the wall or floor. A new thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system. The condensate drain line runs from the indoor coil to a floor drain or to the exterior, carrying away moisture the coil pulls from the air.

The drawing beside this text shows a standard layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece fits the configuration of your house.

Severe Weather Events in Sullivan County

Local weather puts real demand on cooling equipment, and what a system endures over its life depends heavily on where it runs. A central AC installation sized and built for this area has to account for what the climate here actually does.
