Sizing central AC for a house in Huntington County is a local question before it is a catalog one. 144 severe weather events were recorded in Huntington County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, a system spends its working life running against weather that pushes it hard on a regular basis, and a contractor who treats sizing as a simple square-footage calculation will leave the install underbuilt for what the climate actually asks of it. Duct sealing, refrigerant line placement, and unit capacity all carry more weight here than they would somewhere the weather sits quiet most years.

Unfinished basement with concrete block walls, exposed wood joists, and insulated and galvanized metal ductwork, with two cardboard boxes and a coil of black corrugated pipe on the concrete floor.

Ductwork laid down for a furnace and nothing else shapes what a central AC installation costs and how long it takes. Half the homes in Huntington County, Indiana were built in 1966 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor putting in a new system has to trace what is already in the walls and attic, measure it, and decide whether it moves air the way a cooling load requires. Where it does not, the duct work gets modified or replaced before the outdoor unit is even priced. The electrical panel gets the same look, because the original service was sized for what the house needed then.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms with furniture, overhead ductwork, an indoor air handler unit, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines at the side of the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace cabinet stands in a utility room, basement, or attic and houses the evaporator coil that connects the indoor side of the system to the outdoor unit.

A copper refrigerant line set runs between the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture away from the evaporator coil to a floor drain or outside. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what configuration fits your specific house.

Weather puts real demands on cooling equipment, and those demands are local. A system sized and installed for what Huntington County actually sees will hold up better than one that was not.
