A contractor quoting a central AC install in Fulton County has to work out what the existing system was actually up against before it failed. 53 severe weather events were recorded in Fulton County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an occasional event here, not a standing condition. A system that gave out is far more likely to have run too long on an undersized or poorly installed original unit than to have been worn down by storm load. That means the sizing conversation and the quality of the new install carry more weight than any weather allowance, and a contractor who skips that diagnosis is guessing at the spec.

Unfinished basement with concrete block walls, a bare concrete floor, exposed wood floor joists, and insulated metal ductwork running along the ceiling, with two cardboard boxes and a coiled gray flexible hose on the floor.

Ductwork laid down for a furnace and left mostly untouched carries a different geometry than what a central AC system wants: tighter in the wrong places, short on return paths, and sized around moving warm air up rather than cool air through every room. Half the homes in Fulton County, Indiana were built in 1966 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor installing central AC in a house of that vintage has to assess whether the existing duct runs can handle the system before the equipment question even opens. Electrical service is the same story: older panels often lack the capacity a modern condenser requires, and that gap shows up in the quote, not after the install.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior ductwork connected to an indoor air handler and an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the two components that do the heaviest work in the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or closet, and this is where the system pulls heat out of the indoor air before sending cooled air back through the house.

A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor unit and the indoor coil, connecting the two halves of the system through the wall or floor. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over when the system runs and at what target temperature.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece fits the specific conditions of your home.

Severe Weather Events in Fulton County

Weather puts real demands on cooling equipment, and those demands vary by location. A system sized and installed for what Fulton County actually sees will hold up better and run more efficiently than one specced to a generic standard.
